PM workshop & student presentation, Cotham School, Bristol – based on Dmitri & Uncle Joe
This format was developed as a workshop experience for secondary school Performing Arts students:
-
Bozarts performed an abridged version of Dmitri & Uncle Joe to the students.
-
This serves as a catalyst for the students to create their own integrative music and drama work over two hours, facilitated by Bozarts artists.
-
The complete Bozarts play and the students’ newly-minted work are performed for the public in the evening.
-
The event concludes with a short audience and participants’ feedback session.
Responses to this project from Cotham School Performing Arts staff include:
-
“Students went from nothing to public performance in a matter of hours – a feat in itself!"
-
"It was a really positive experience and great to see the students taking on a serious subject matter with such gusto."
-
"The whole event offered students exactly what I hoped it would do.
Making Music Work - St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School, Bristol
A 3-hour performance and interactive workshop for Sixth Form Music students – introducing them to creativity, collaborating together and the reality of making a living as a professional performing musician.
Workshop components include:
-
Being a professional musician – the transition from studying to earning a living.
-
Innovation in live concert music – programming, multi-genre collaborations, etc.
-
Creating a successful show.
-
What do live music performers need to compete against other media?
-
Masterclasses in stage craft, vocal technique, accompaniment and arranging.
Work can be linked very effectively to Bozarts’ Siren Songs evening performance event - the Bozarts animateurs visit the school in advance and the workshop and students have free entry to the subsequent Siren Songs performance.
Bozarts animateurs are leaders in their field, and include John Telfer (music theatre actor), Karen Street (saxophone and accordion) and David Adams (Bozarts Director).
Feedback from Edward Davies, St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School Director of Music:
-
“A fantastic workshop and Siren Songs concert last week – a great benefit to our students.
-
The performances were superb examples of excellence - and the linked master classes showed how to achieve it.
-
Communication of the performers with Gifted and Talented students was excellent, supportive and inspiring.
-
This had a big impact on 6th form A-Level success in their A-level composing module, and inspired several of our students to explore taking music at University level.
-
The modelling of how diverse programming and media can work together to achieve a cohesive narrative was inspirational in terms of showing how community cohesion is possible.
-
Bozarts’ showing of the making of the classical/world/folk/jazz music Siren Songs St. George’s project to our students and their families is leading to an upsurge in attendance of our students at live music events.”
