Worlds End Competition
Honourable Mentions
Bozarts is pleased to honour the quality of these entrants' texts as climate change anthems for the Worlds End Competition
Climate Change Anthem set to Tallis:
Climate Lament:
Dave Mitchell
The trees are gone, the Earth lies bare,
and darkness hides the sun
No sound is heard, no water flows,
no wind blows through the air
I walked all day, no life I found, all things have passed away
The Earth is destroyed, for profit and greed, it never will return
My friends are gone, the ones who held,
the hope that we could save
Our precious life, our joy our song,
the love that filled our hearts
We laughed, we danced, we loved, we cried, and hope filled all our days
We filled the streets, we called out for change, but it was all in vain
Alternative verse:
They needed more, to fill their greed,
those men in corporate suits,
They could not see,
they cared still less,
that this was not the way
So we did pay, with pain and tears, for what they threw away
And gave our lives, our hopes and dreams, our children are no more
No Planet B:
David Braziel
The billionaires are making plans
to leave this world for good.
They’ve fouled the air they’ve bought the lands,
condemned the seas to flood.
They’re turning their gaze towards the stars their empires will extend.
New worlds to plunder, rape and scar, more wealth they cannot spend.
We can’t just blame the billionaires
we helped them on their way.
We played their games, we bought their wares, we gave the earth away.
It’s long past time to do what’s right, it starts with you and me.
So raise your voices, join in the fight, there is no planet B.
The Soil:
Andrew Wale
The soil, as thin as ever seen
Brings low the starving beast
And we, who hunger, well may curse
The ones who, selfish, feast
This powerful few, our Earth destroy
They gain by what we lose
But Nature bears a sword and shield
As mothers always do
Our mother holds us in her arms
To save us from the void
But those who trade her love for wealth
By wealth shall be destroyed
And we, destroyed may also be
If protest, make we none
So never yield, be sword and shield
Good daughter and good son
The Balance:
Edward Alport
I heard the Earth cry out to me
above the clattering noise
Of engines and of factories
that are drowning out its voice.
What could I do to help its hurt? How could I ease its pain?
What could I do to bring it back to balance once again?
There are those who line their pockets with
the wealth that Earth can give,
And those who take regardless of
how other people live.
But we must answer to Earth’s cry amid their filth and stain,
And strive together to bring Earth to balance once again.
witness:
Kate Rambridge
so crazy rain, what will you drown,
you endless crazy rain.
deeper and darker every hour,
you flood, you silent flood.
the birds in the wilderness, we sang aloud with them their song.
I can’t hear the birds that called me to sing, but in my heart I’m an ark.
this flowering world taught me to flower,
its air drew me to breathe.
the river out of eden flowed
alive and shining on.
I can’t find the leaves that showed me where to grow, so much is gone
but here is the world that’s left for my love, and in my heart I’m an ark.
Low Mood Melody:
Louise Richmond
I’d like to leave
One thing that’s pure
On earth for my children
I’d like to leave
One thing alive
On earth to grow again
But you went to COP
And you copped out
It’s getting hot in here
You flooded the river you sold us down
We won’t forgive you
I’d like to leave
One thing that’s pure
On earth for my children I’d like to leave
One thing alive
On earth to grow again
But you sold our earth
For fossil fuels
It’s getting wet in here
You flooded the river you sold us down
We won’t forgive you
